Introduction:
The International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 celebration, organized by the Institute for Rural Sustainable Development (IRSD) in collaboration with SDB Bank, was successfully held on March 8, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Auditorium (A), District Secretariat, Kandy.
This year, we embraced the IWD campaign theme "Accelerate Action" with a special focus on "Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Harnessing Music Therapy for Mental Resilience and Success." The event highlighted the transformative role of music therapy in enhancing psychological well-being, reducing stress, and fostering creativity and focus—key elements for entrepreneurial success. The discussions also explored how music therapy strengthens confidence, decision-making, and emotional resilience, thereby empowering women entrepreneurs to thrive in their businesses.
The event was attended by a diverse audience, including women entrepreneurs from various industries, particularly from the tourism sector and representatives from the Central Province Women’s Chamber. The distinguished presence of experts, professionals, and Officials from SDB Bank as the financial stakeholders further enriched the discussions, making the event an impactful experience for all participants.
The event commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, signifying the spirit of empowerment and unity. The welcome address was delivered by Mrs. Shirani Weerakoon, Chairperson of IRSD, who provided an insightful briefing on the objectives of the celebration.
Special messages of best wishes were shared by esteemed guests, including: Professor Athula Gnanapala, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, University of Sabaragamuwa, Mrs. Tharanga Rupasinghe, Director S&QA, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Mr. Chitral De Silva, Chief Business Officer, SDB Bank. Following this, Mrs. Thilini Wiradiwakara, Manager of the Central Bank, Matale, conducted a special address on Financial Literacy, providing valuable insights on financial management and opportunities available for women entrepreneurs.
A key highlight of the event was the expert session on "The Power of Music Therapy" conducted by Mr. Sudath Samarasinghe, Former Deputy Director General - NIE and Music Therapist. This session effectively demonstrated how music therapy can serve as a powerful tool in managing stress, improving focus, and fostering emotional resilience among entrepreneurs.
Participants actively engaged in this session, sharing their experiences and expressing enthusiasm for incorporating music therapy into their personal and professional lives. The practical examples provided made the session both informative and interactive.
The panel discussion was one of the most anticipated segments of the event, focusing on how the tourism sector can foster new business opportunities and drive entrepreneurial growth. The discussion also addressed financial assistance available for women entrepreneurs through SDB Bank.
