The Institute for Rural Sustainable Development (IRSD), in collaboration with the MTI Group (USA), successfully implemented a Cashew Planting Project at Muriyakadawala School, located in the Thirappane Divisional Secretariat of the Anuradhapura District. This initiative was made possible through the generous personal contributions of Mr. Prabhath D Rajakaruna and Mr. Sarath Amarakoon, who provided financial support for the procurement of 200 cashew plants.

MTI Groups Inc., a leading food importer in Canada and the USA, headquartered in Canada, recognizes the increasing global demand for cashews and the potential of Sri Lanka’s fertile land to contribute to this growing market. Committed to fostering sustainable agricultural development, MTI Groups is spearheading the establishment of cashew-growing villages in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province while developing the Ceylon Cashew Trail—a brand aimed at attracting tourists and cultivating an eco-tourism community.

As part of this initiative, the Institute for Rural Sustainable Development (IRSD) has collaborated with MTI Groups to launch a cashew plantation project at Anu/Muriyakadawala Primary School, integrating it into their long-term cashew cultivation strategy. Through this partnership, we aim to enhance local livelihoods, empower communities, and position Sri Lanka as a global leader in cashew production—all while promoting a sustainable and prosperous future for the nation.

Project Objectives

  • To promote environmental sustainability through tree planting.
  • To enhance income generation opportunities for the local community.
  • To educate students on the importance of sustainable agriculture and agroforestry.

Project Implementation

A total of 200 cashew plants were distributed as follows:

  • A portion of the plants was allocated for planting on the school premises, enriching the environment and serving as a future educational and economic resource for students.
  • The remaining plants were distributed among community members to establish small-scale cashew cultivation, contributing to their long-term economic stability.

Event Participation

The project was officially launched on 16 February 2025 with the participation of the Divisional Secretary of Thirappane and the Additional District Secretary, representing the District Secretary in Anuradhapura. The Grama Niladhari and the Principal of Muriyakadawala School played a highly dedicated role in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

Impact and Future Prospects

The project has instilled environmental awareness among students and the local community, emphasizing the importance of sustainable agriculture. By integrating cashew cultivation, the school and community members will benefit from future economic opportunities through nut production and sales. IRSD and MTI Group will continue to monitor and support the project to ensure its sustainability and success.

This initiative exemplifies the power of collaboration and personal commitment to fostering sustainable development. IRSD extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Prabhath, Mr. Sarath Amarakoon, and the MTI Group (USA) for their invaluable support in making this project a reality. Special thanks are also extended to Chamila Deagama, Regional Manager from the Cashew Corporation, for providing technical inputs to the community, ensuring the project's long-term success. We look forward to further initiatives that uplift communities and promote environmental conservation.
