Introduction

The IRSD, in collaboration with the Department of Cooperative Development – Central Province, has taken a groundbreaking step in establishing the Women Entrepreneurs Cooperative (WEC). This initiative marks a significant milestone in fostering women’s entrepreneurship by providing them with a structured platform to scale their businesses, access financial resources, and build sustainable networks. The second phase of the Women Entrepreneurs Cooperative (WEC) initiative was successfully launched on 30th January 2025, with the participation of 71 women entrepreneurs and officials from the Department of Cooperative Development.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mrs. Shirani Weerakoon, Chairperson of the Institute for Rural Sustainable Development (IRSD), who emphasized the significance of defining a clear roadmap to ensure the sustainability and growth of the cooperative.

Recognizing the cooperative sector as a key economic driver for rural development, as outlined in the current government’s policy framework, the WEC is poised to play a vital role in enhancing business opportunities for women entrepreneurs in alignment with cooperative development initiatives.

Mr. Susantha Amiyangoda, the District Officer of the Department of Cooperative Development, provided an insightful explanation of the legal framework for establishing the Women Entrepreneurs' Cooperative (WEC). He highlighted the essential legal provisions, regulatory requirements, and cooperative principles that guide the formation and operation of the WEC. His presentation emphasized the significance of a strong legal foundation in ensuring sustainability, accountability, and effective governance within the cooperative structure.

Ms. Sumedha Kumaraarachchi -Manager, Rural Upliftment of SANASA Development Bank delivered an insightful speech on cooperative entrepreneurship, highlighting its vital role in fostering sustainable economic growth and community development. She emphasized how cooperative enterprises empower individuals by promoting collective decision-making, shared responsibility, and equitable profit distribution. Drawing from real-world examples, she illustrated how cooperative models create opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs, especially women, to thrive in competitive markets. Her speech also underscored the importance of collaboration, trust, and innovation in ensuring the long-term success of cooperative ventures.

  • Selection of office bearers and committee members as per the regulations of the Department of Cooperative Development.
  • Development of a six-month roadmap outlining strategies for Capacity Development, income generation, fundraising, and membership expansion.

The participants enthusiastically showcased their interest in establishing the Women's Entrepreneurship Council (WEC) and actively engaged in the discussions throughout the event. Their commitment was evident during the group work sessions, where they collaboratively shared insights and innovative ideas. With a strong sense of purpose, they contributed valuable suggestions to shape the roadmap for WEC, ensuring it aligns with the aspirations and needs of women entrepreneurs in the region. Their active participation and collective vision reflected a deep dedication to fostering a supportive and empowering entrepreneurial network.

Officials and committee members appointed

We are pleased to introduce the officials and committee members appointed to the Women's Entrepreneurship Council (WEC). Comprising women entrepreneurs dedicated to take forward this initiative. This team will play a vital role in driving the WEC’s mission to empower women entrepreneurs to support the growth of women-led enterprises. Their leadership will be instrumental in shaping a strong and sustainable future for women entrepreneurs in Kandy District.
